Punch Out was developed by Canadian developer Next Level Games. It was released in May 2009. It is a boxing video game for the Wii. You could also say that it’s more of a puzzle/rhythm game, where each opposing boxer offers a unique challenge that players must decode and beat.
Punch Out features a boxer named Little Mac who works his way up the professional boxing circuits. The gameplay takes elements from previous Punch Out games, featuring the star punches from the NES game and also stamina recovery from Super Punch Out. There are three circuits’ worth of fighters minor, major and world, with 13 opponents in all.
The game requires good reflexes in response to the computer controlled boxers’ moves. Timing is everything in Punch Out. The trick is to learn the secrets and timing of each opponent and then defeat them. You can moved ahead in one of three ways by successfully KO’ing the opponent, by earning a TKO after knocking down the opponent three times in one round, or winning via decision.
The game features a split screen head to head mode between Little Mac and a clone. On collecting enough power, the player can transform into Giga Mac. The game moves into its regular single player view, as Little Mac tries to overcome the powerful Giga Mac. For the first time in the Punch Out series, there is a two player mode.
Punch Out is a great recreation of the NES original and retains every element that makes the game challenging and addictive.
